This attenuator is formed by a series of resistors which functions as a voltage divider.
The rotary switch moves along the chain as the volume dial is being turned to select the attenuator output.
Its principle is similar as of a potentiometer. The input impedance of the attenuator remains constant, therefore, the signal source is constant with a non-varying loading.
This attenuator is formed by 2 resistors and 2 switch-contacts per step, results in a unique combination of resistors per step.
Their function is to add up the impedance of the stepped attenuator, which forms a high quality voltage divider network.
Each resistor set has an equal total series of resistance; therefore, the impedance of the signal source is always the same.
This attenuator is formed by a fixed series of resistors and shunt resistors.
Signal is fed through the fixed resistor and different shunt resistors, which is selected from 59 values ranging from zero to infinity.
Despite the fact that shunt design will introduce varying values of input impedance, applying a single resistor and switch in a signal path could compromise any possible matching issues.
